The regiment was founded in North America in 1986, and currently has two active and approved companies, plus another company now forming.
Re-enactment Period: English Civil War (1642-46 Royalist Regiment) and Early Colonial Period (Swedish/Dutch/English). Early Colonial emphasis is on Dutch portrayals, and the regiment frequently works with the reconstructed Dutch ship, Half Moon, in this endeavor. Affiliations: A founding unit of the English Civil War Society of America (ECWSA), 1984 In 1995, established as a company in the King's Lifeguard of Foot of the Sealed Knot in England (Colonel Keith Walker, Commander), and the official representation of the regiment in North America. On April 10th, 1999, was bestowed the honor of being "the official representatives of the English Civil War in North America," by the British Embassy, in a ceremony at which the regiment was presented its new colours for the 1st and 2nd Captain's Companies. Membership Policy & Fees: Each company sets their own regimental fee for members, to pay for regimental equipment such as flag, drum, tentage and camp/cooking items, as needed. Each company has complete loaner kits for interested new members to help them get started, and while new members either make or purchase their own. Goals & Philosophy: The reconstructed regiment, as the original historical regiment (and all ECWSA units), strives to be the best in authentic portrayal of dress, drill, camp, and comportment for the period, while still having FUN! Emphasis is on military (pike/musket drill and maneuvers, plus tactical use thereof, and sword skills for fencing skirmish) and camp skills, so both the military & camp support and compliment each other. The regiment welcomes both men, women and families who wish to portray the relatively inexpensive ECW period of Stuart England & related Early American Colonial periods. Current Officers & Staff: The reconstructed regiment, as its historical counterpart, has officers of previous good experience (wargaming & living history re-enacting), plus the commander of the regiment is also a professional 'swordsman' in his right (Fight Director). As such the regiment continually performs exceptionally in various military and civilian competitions it enters, as well as performance in drill and other related activities. Additionally, the regiment itself maintains a very high level of morale and fun quotient, and is the largest ECW unit in North America! Currently the reconstructed regiment consists of 50 members, with regimental officers and staff as follows:
Required Dress: The recreated regiment uses the 1642-43 issue of uniform and equipment to the King's Lifeguard of Foot for its portrayal, and uses patterns and designs of the mid-17th century for other clothing and general non-military items. Drill Manuals: As per for all ECWSA units, the following drill manuals are used for pike and musket drills, firing formations, and maneuvers: Directions for Musters, printed by Thomas Buck (1638) The Principles of the Art Militarie, Henry Hexham (1639) Militarie Discipline or The Young Artilleryman, William Barriffe (1643) Research: All details of dress, drill, regimental history, etc., are from up-to-date research performed by Partisan Press authors (through Dave Ryan, founder & editor), plus contacts at the National Army Museum, Tower of London, Royal Armouries at Leeds, and other related museums in England. The ECWSA has a handbook (which members receive upon joining) that is a comprehensive guide on everything about the ECW (complete patterns, drills, sources, background, etc.) to help members learn about the period. Contacts: Anyone interested in becoming a member of the King's Lifeguard of Foot, either as a soldier (pikeman or musketeer), musician (drummer or fifer), or campfollower, and fighting for the King's Cause, please contact one of the following regional coordinators. If you are interested in starting your own company of the King’s Lifeguard of Foot, please contact the Regimental Commander. The King’s Lifeguard of Foot and the ECWSA welcome all who want to get involved in the ECW living history re-enacting hobby in the US.
